About the role

Role overview

Join Sophos as a Software Engineer (remote-first) to support and improve automation, tooling, and release processes for cloud-based services. You’ll collaborate with software, platform, QA, security, and release stakeholders to maintain CI/CD and cloud-native environments.

Key missions

Support CI/CD pipelines and release automation for SaaS applications, microservices, and containerized workloads
Deploy, configure, and troubleshoot application builds across development, QA, and production environments
Build and maintain automation scripts in Groovy, Python, and Bash to reduce manual release/build and environment-management effort

Responsibilities

Investigate build failures, deployment failures, environment issues, cloud infrastructure behavior, and application runtime problems (with support from senior engineers)
Work with developer tooling and artifact/release systems (e.g., GitHub, Artifactory)
Support secure automation involving secrets and certificate concepts

Requirements

2+ years in platform engineering, DevOps, release engineering, infrastructure automation, software engineering, or closely related work
Strong Linux fundamentals (CLI troubleshooting, shell scripting, process inspection, permissions, networking basics, logs, system services)
Practical scripting experience with Groovy, Python, and/or Bash
Familiarity with CI/CD and release automation using tools such as Jenkins and GitHub Actions
Familiarity with build tools such as Gradle, Maven, or npm
Experience investigating issues across builds, deployments, and runtime environments

Nice-to-haves

AWS experience (compute, identity, storage, messaging, monitoring, container platforms); Azure is a plus
Kubernetes concepts; Amazon EKS is a plus
Docker and container-based delivery
Terraform (hands-on strongly preferred) and/or other IaC tools such as Ansible, Packer, Chef
Release practices: branching, tagging, versioning, artifact promotion, rollback planning, progressive deployments
DevSecOps scanning tools (e.g., Black Duck, Prisma Cloud)
Basic knowledge of secrets management, SSL/TLS, and secure automation practices
Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools responsibly
