About the role

Role overview

Senior Staff Engineer on Stripe’s Merchant Experience team. You will lead technical efforts to shape how merchants interact with Stripe products, improving quality, performance, and user experience of core merchant-facing surfaces.

Responsibilities

Define and execute technical strategy for merchant-facing experiences, emphasizing quality, performance, and AI integration.
Lead cross-team design and delivery of complex projects improving reliability, responsiveness, and UX.
Establish engineering standards, tooling, and processes to enable a quality-first culture and consistent high-quality UI delivery.
Drive performance improvements as a product priority, including instrumentation, architectural enhancements, and performance budgets.
Innovate in merchant UX by prototyping AI-driven approaches for discovery, configuration, and operational workflows.
Build and evolve scalable platforms/frameworks and frontend foundations for internal and external users.

Requirements

10–15+ years of software engineering experience, with strong background building large-scale, user-facing web applications.
Proven ability to lead large cross-functional engineering projects with broad organizational impact.
Deep expertise in modern frontend development with strong UX judgment and technical implementation.
Full-stack experience and familiarity with backend services, APIs, and data layers.
Track record of improving load times, reliability, and error rates.
Strong communication skills; can articulate technical vision to engineers, product teams, and executives.
Ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority.
Hands-on performance engineering: profiling, instrumentation, and optimization.
Experience with design systems/component libraries or frontend platform infrastructure (ideally React).
Interest in AI and experience integrating AI-powered features.
Familiarity with distributed systems, API design, and platform development.
Mentorship experience and commitment to high engineering standards.

Remote / location

Can work remotely (within 35 miles of a Stripe office) or in-office, with flexibility for hybrid arrangements.
