Software Engineer (React.js, Node.js)

Role Overview

Staff Software Engineer joining the engineering team to lead the design, development, and maintenance of complex software systems supporting NerdWallet’s insurance products and digital experiences.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-quality software for insurance products
• Architect complex systems that drive business growth and improve user engagement
• Lead technical initiatives; mentor and guide junior engineers
• Review and optimize existing codebases for performance, security, and maintainability
• Build and maintain secure integrations with third-party platforms/partners
• Lead SEO optimization efforts (site speed, accessibility, and search rankings)
• Implement observability and instrumentation (e.g., Datadog) for monitoring and troubleshooting
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and data specialists to align solutions with business goals
• Contribute to the engineering roadmap and technical strategy
• Promote best practices in coding, architecture, and continuous improvement

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in CS/Engineering (or equivalent practical experience)
• 10+ years of software engineering experience
• Strong expertise in React, TypeScript, and Node.js
• Familiarity with Next.js
• Strong experience with relational databases: PostgreSQL and MySQL
• Experience building public-facing websites with focus on SEO, accessibility (ADA), and responsive design
• Solid understanding of SDLC, plus Agile/Scrum and DevOps methodologies
• Proficiency designing scalable, distributed, high-performance systems
• Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
• Familiarity with DevOps tools: Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, GitHub Actions
• Proficiency in testing, debugging, and security best practices
• Strong version control workflow knowledge, especially Git

Nice-to-haves

• Experience specifically optimizing insurance flows and improving conversion-focused integrations
• Demonstrated ability to drive technical strategy and observability practices across teams
