About the role
Role Overview
SFI is seeking a Mid-Level Backend Software Engineer to support a high-visibility federal program focused on modernizing data-driven processes used to evaluate vehicle safety performance. You will design and build scalable backend services, secure web APIs, and components for a mission-critical data platform.
Responsibilities
- Design and architect backend applications for a modern, data-centric platform
- Develop, maintain, and optimize scalable, high-performance backend applications using Node.js
- Build and maintain RESTful APIs and integrate with external data sources
- Create reusable, modular components and support state management strategies
- Implement unit and end-to-end testing (e.g., with Postman)
- Participate in peer code reviews and follow coding standards/best practices
- Collaborate with senior engineers, UI/UX, QA, and stakeholders in an Agile/Scrum environment
- Debug and troubleshoot complex technical issues
- Contribute technical documentation (system design, APIs, workflows)
- Support CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions)
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field OR 6 years equivalent experience
- Minimum 3 years experience as a Backend Software Engineer
- Proficiency with Node.js, RESTful APIs, GitHub, AWS, and API Gateway
- Experience with Agile/Scrum and DevSecOps
- Hands-on experience with Jira and Confluence
- Strong analytical/problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Public Trust clearance (fingerprinting required)
Nice-to-Haves
- Express-based API development
- AWS services: S3, Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway
- Docker and Kubernetes exposure
- Security best practices such as OAuth and JWT
- Familiarity with DevOps and CI/CD; Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
- Prior experience supporting federal government projects
Work Model & Clearance
- Flexible/remote with occasional on-site support
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and able to obtain Public Trust clearance (typically 4–8 weeks)
