About the role
Role overview
You will lead the enterprise-wide design system team as an engineering leader, owning the technical strategy, architecture, and implementation of a scalable, accessible, high-performance UI component platform. The platform supports both web and mobile applications across the organization and serves as a trusted foundation for digital experiences.
Responsibilities
- Define the design system vision and roadmap and act as the senior technical strategist.
- Lead AI-powered design tooling integration, including automated component scaffolding, design-to-code workflows, and accessibility auditing.
- Establish governance models for contribution, versioning, deprecation, and adoption metrics.
- Architect scalable, performant, accessible component libraries aligned with WCAG and modern frontend best practices.
- Set technical standards for component development: API design, theming architecture, testing strategies, and performance benchmarks.
- Conduct research/prototyping for emerging tech (e.g., AI-assisted design tools, design tokens, headless UI patterns).
- Manage, mentor, and grow a team of engineers; foster continuous learning and collaboration.
- Partner with design, product, accessibility, and engineering teams to align roadmaps and gather feedback.
- Drive design system adoption and developer experience via documentation and friction reduction.
- Communicate progress and business value to executive leadership.
Requirements
- 6+ years of frontend/UI engineering with expertise in modern frameworks such as React, Vue, Angular, or similar.
- 2+ years managing and developing high-performing engineering teams.
- Proven experience building/scaling enterprise design systems or component libraries.
- Strong architecture experience with design tokens, theming systems, accessibility standards (WCAG), and cross-platform considerations.
- Strategic mindset to translate long-term vision into actionable roadmaps.
- Degree in Computer Science, HCI, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Nice-to-haves
- Experience integrating AI into design systems (e.g., automated scaffolding and design-to-code workflows).
- Experience with headless UI patterns and advanced governance/adoption metrics.
Location / Remote policy
- Remote within the U.S. with some in-office requirements for candidates in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C.
