Software Engineer III - Back End (Remote)

Role Overview

Software Engineer III – Back End (Remote) is an emerging individual contributor role. You’ll collaborate with a team to meet delivery goals across scope, schedule, and software release requirements, while growing leadership, guidance, and mentoring capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Estimate and complete backend development tasks including coding, requirements gathering, and analysis (with guidance as needed)
• Use strong technical and communication skills to deepen context knowledge and mentor junior developers
• Assess, diagnose, and prioritize issues in the systems you own, aligning with other practice areas
• Participate in on-call rotations as needed
• Present and document your work for internal and external stakeholders
• Participate in planning sessions to build shared understanding of major architectures and design patterns
• Support hiring by evaluating coding/homework assignments and potentially assisting with interviews
• Drive improvements in engineering processes and practices using influential collaboration skills

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of engineering experience (relevant experience may substitute for education)
• Experience prototyping and deploying backend web applications using modern open-source software, including:
  • server-side processing
  • data storage
  • integration with frontend development
• Web development using open-source languages and frameworks (e.g., Ruby, Python; Django, Rails)
• Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs
• Team experience working with Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Lean)
• Ability to write developer-friendly documentation

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience presenting/writing about engineering work to external audiences (not explicitly required, but emphasized in responsibilities)
• Experience with on-call rotations
