Software Engineer III

Role Overview

Availity is seeking a Software Engineer III to join the Essentials Platform team. The team maintains and operates a suite of microservices and shared libraries that power internal Essentials portals, applications, and developer teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services and shared libraries primarily in Java
• Help evolve a microservices-based platform focused on:
  • Scalability
  • Resilience and fault tolerance
  • Observability and operational excellence
• Operate and improve platform reliability, performance, and clarity of system health
• Promote strong engineering practices: cleaner, leaner, faster, and more cost-efficient cloud operations

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Strong, hands-on experience with Java
  • Ability and willingness to ramp quickly into other technologies
• Solid understanding of:
  • Microservices architecture
  • RESTful APIs
  • Distributed systems concepts
• Cloud experience building and running applications (AWS preferred)
• Working knowledge of:
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Automated testing strategies
  • Source control and trunk-based development
• Proven ability to:
  • Take ownership of complex systems
  • Make sound technical decisions
  • Balance speed with quality and long-term maintainability

Nice-to-Haves

• Production experience with Java
• Experience with Docker / containerized workloads
• Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform)
• Kubernetes / managed container platforms
• Strong experience with logging, metrics, and distributed tracing
• Experience supporting internal platform/shared services teams
• Healthcare or other regulated industry experience
