About the role
Role Overview
Availity is seeking a Software Engineer III to join the Essentials Platform team. The team maintains and operates a suite of microservices and shared libraries that power internal Essentials portals, applications, and developer teams.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend services and shared libraries primarily in Java
- Help evolve a microservices-based platform focused on:
- Scalability
- Resilience and fault tolerance
- Observability and operational excellence
- Operate and improve platform reliability, performance, and clarity of system health
- Promote strong engineering practices: cleaner, leaner, faster, and more cost-efficient cloud operations
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong, hands-on experience with Java
- Ability and willingness to ramp quickly into other technologies
- Solid understanding of:
- Microservices architecture
- RESTful APIs
- Distributed systems concepts
- Cloud experience building and running applications (AWS preferred)
- Working knowledge of:
- CI/CD pipelines
- Automated testing strategies
- Source control and trunk-based development
- Proven ability to:
- Take ownership of complex systems
- Make sound technical decisions
- Balance speed with quality and long-term maintainability
Nice-to-Haves
- Production experience with Java
- Experience with Docker / containerized workloads
- Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform)
- Kubernetes / managed container platforms
- Strong experience with logging, metrics, and distributed tracing
- Experience supporting internal platform/shared services teams
- Healthcare or other regulated industry experience
