Software Engineer III, Android Applications

Role Overview

Flock Safety is looking for an Android Applications Engineer III to join the Device Software team. You will help expand LPR (License Plate Recognition) capabilities and own the reliability of a 100,000+ device headless fleet that operates 24/7 in real-world conditions.

Responsibilities

• Develop and enhance Android native apps/services in Kotlin.
• Build, test, and deploy system-level apps and services for custom device hardware.
• Optimize image pipelines supporting LPR capabilities.
• Integrate on-device ML into the Android workflow.
• Improve tools and services used by other engineers.
• Streamline code so it supports multiple platforms.

Requirements

• Experience developing Android native apps/services in Kotlin.
• Experience building and shipping Android apps on custom hardware.
• Strong debugging skills with Android debugging tools.
• Proven ability to develop, test, and deploy features pragmatically.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient with Git.

Nice to Haves

• Experience with Camera2.
• Experience with Kotlin Flows.
• Experience with Android NDK.

90-Day Plan (high level)

• First 30 days: Learn devices, cloud systems, and customer requirements; understand device product goals and system design.
• First 60 days: Contribute to system app development and system services development; improve tools for other engineers.
• 90 days & beyond: Become a key contributor to system apps/services, help develop new products and platform generation, and play a central role in cross-platform code support.
