Software Engineer II, Backend (Reliability Platform)

Role Overview

Affirm is hiring a Software Engineer II (Backend) for the Reliability Platform to design and build a next-generation reliability command center for production systems. You’ll combine distributed systems engineering with AI-assisted development to help teams understand, debug, and improve service health.

What You’ll Do

• Build a centralized reliability command center providing a unified view of system health, risk, and reliability across services and environments.
• Create AI agents to support:
  • incident triage
  • root-cause exploration
  • log/trace summarization
  • recommended next actions
• Develop developer-facing features and APIs to help engineers explore data, debug, and make better decisions.
• Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude, Copilot-like tools) to prototype, refactor, and ship reliably.
• Own projects end-to-end: requirements, architecture, implementation, testing, rollout, and iteration based on feedback.
• Collaborate with partner teams across product, infrastructure, data, and SRE to turn pain points into simple, powerful solutions.

What We Look For

• 1.5+ years of software engineering experience (or equivalent practical experience).
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent.
• Strong proficiency in Python, including experience architecting data-intensive applications and robust APIs.
• Strong problem-solving and product sense (focus on the “what” and “why,” not just the “how”).
• Ability to take ambiguous requirements and rapidly iterate to working solutions.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude) and enthusiasm for shipping faster.
• Practical use of LLMs / AI frameworks with guardrails and citations.

Compensation & Benefits (Highlights)

• Base pay range (USA):
  • $165,000–$225,000 (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT)
  • $146,000–$206,000 (all other U.S. states)

Remote Policy

Affirm is remote-first: most roles are remote, and you can work almost anywhere within your country of employment. Some roles in proximal locations may occasionally require in-office work.
