Software Engineer

Role Overview

You will design, build, and maintain the technical systems and application infrastructure powering high-quality, human-centered information experiences. The role focuses on the architecture, performance, and reliability of web applications and the data systems behind them, in support of Information Design & Engineering (ID&E) goals.

Responsibilities

• Architect, build, and maintain web application infrastructure and the supporting data systems for interactive, narrative-driven information experiences.
• Own application-layer technical standards, including:
  • code quality
  • system design patterns
  • deployment practices
  • performance benchmarks
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Information Engineers, designers, and data scientists to deliver data stories, visualizations, and user interfaces.
• Write and maintain production-quality full-stack code, with emphasis on:
  • back-end services
  • data APIs
  • application infrastructure
• Evaluate, integrate, and responsibly deploy generative AI capabilities within web applications and information systems.
• Prototype proof-of-concept architectures for emerging interface paradigms, including XR (extended reality) and AI-assisted user experiences.
• Ensure reliability, security, accessibility, and scalability across systems owned by the ID&E team.
• Research and evaluate new technologies/frameworks and architectural approaches to advance team capabilities.
• Establish and document technical standards and best practices for application engineering in the ID&E practice.
• Partner with Information Engineers on shared front-end concerns and provide architectural guidance related to design system implementation and UI component quality.
• Participate in continuous learning focused on emerging technologies aligned to the transformation office’s R&D agenda.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems) or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of experience in application engineering, software development, or a closely related technology role.
