About the role

Role Overview

Evolent is seeking a Software Engineer to join an Agile team building healthcare-focused backend software solutions. The role supports analytics, integration, and operational workflows across the healthcare ecosystem.

What You’ll Be Doing

Design and develop scalable backend services using Python and FastAPI
Build event-driven and serverless solutions with Microsoft Azure (e.g., Azure Functions, Azure Event Hub)
Develop and maintain data ingestion pipelines to load healthcare data into Microsoft Fabric for enterprise reporting and analytics
Contribute across the full software development lifecycle (author/review design docs, implement, participate in architecture discussions)
Collaborate with product owners, QA partners, and other engineers in an Agile process (planning, stand-ups, retrospectives)
Support testing, debugging, and validation to meet quality, performance, and regulatory expectations
Modernize and optimize existing systems, including performance tuning legacy SQL stored procedures
Use GitHub workflows for CI/CD, code reviews, and automated quality checks
Write unit tests to improve coverage and maintainability
Leverage Copilot/AI-assisted tools to improve developer productivity

Responsibilities

Build, test, and maintain data-driven backend applications with Python
Create and optimize API-based integrations (FastAPI; also experience with Django/Flask)
Implement ETL/data pipelines (Azure Data Factory, Fabric, PySpark, and related tooling)
Ensure code quality through clean, maintainable, best-practice development and code reviews
Troubleshoot and resolve bugs; optimize for performance, scalability, and reliability

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in CS/Software Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience
3+ years in software engineering or data engineering
Strong Python proficiency and experience with API-based solutions (FastAPI/Django/Flask)
Hands-on experience with Azure data services (posting cuts off mid-sentence, but indicates Azure data tooling)

Nice to Have / Implied

Experience with Azure Functions, Azure Event Hub, Microsoft Fabric, and PySpark
Strong backend fundamentals and comfort with a fast-paced healthcare tech environment
