About the role

Role overview

Palomar is hiring a Software Engineer (Crop) for a remote position in the United States. You’ll take ownership of systems powering the crop insurance claims platform, building and maintaining features used daily by claims adjusters, underwriters, and operations staff.

A key differentiator of this role is its focus on MPCI and private product claims, within a detailed and frequently updated regulatory environment. The ideal candidate can translate complex policy and regulatory requirements into reliable, well-tested code.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the claims platform
    • Build and own full-stack features for the claims processing platform using Node.js, TypeScript, Vue.js, HTML, and CSS.
    • Cover back-end business logic, API design, and front-end interfaces for claims teams.
  • Translate regulatory requirements into code
    • Interpret and convert government publications and references such as FCIC/RMA handbooks and Loss Adjustment Manuals into technical requirements, data models, and application logic.
    • Validate or debug existing behavior based on those materials.
  • Investigate and resolve PASS and NCIS errors
    • When issues appear in production, identify root causes (data, integration, logic, or misapplied regulatory rule) and implement tested fixes.
    • Operate as an engineering/support function alongside operations (not a claims adjustment role).
  • Collaborate with stakeholders
    • Work with claims, underwriting, and operations teams to understand workflows and ensure the right problems are solved.
  • Test, review, and secure
    • Write unit and integration tests, participate in code review, and uphold quality standards.
    • Apply security best practices, including mitigations aligned with common vulnerabilities.
  • Periodic travel
    • Travel to field offices or industry events as needed to support operations and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience in a production environment.
  • Proficient in Node.js and JavaScript/TypeScript for back-end development.
  • Proficient in Vue.js, HTML, and CSS for front-end development.
  • Experience designing/building RESTful APIs and working across the full stack.
  • Ability to write unit/integration tests and participate in meaningful code reviews.
  • Knowledge of common security vulnerabilities (e.g., OWASP Top 10) and how to mitigate them in application code.
  • Ability to work through large bodies of technical/regulatory documentation and convert them accurately into code.
  • 3+ years of crop-insurance domain knowledge from roles such as claims, compliance, underwriting, or product/IT at an Approved Insurance Provider (AIP), reinsurer, or an RMA-adjacent organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience tracing operational issues back to root cause across policy, data, or logic.
  • Direct familiarity with PASS and NCIS workflows and error patterns.
