About the role
Role Overview
Backend engineer for WeaveGrid’s clean energy DERMS platform. You’ll design, implement, deploy, and own backend services that monitor and manage distributed energy resources on behalf of electric utilities.
Responsibilities
- Independently design, implement, and deploy robust backend software with partner device manufacturers and utilities
- Contribute to technical direction and raise engineering quality; improve robustness, testability, and maintainability
- Build and maintain services for:
- Integrating with diverse device manufacturer APIs
- Monitoring and understanding battery status
- Scheduling and verifying optimal charge/discharge plans
- Ingesting, aggregating, and integrating utility data signals
- Partner with Product Managers and stakeholders to deliver scalable features that expand DERMS capabilities
- Improve reliability, data quality, scalability, and overall system effectiveness across services
- Run production rollouts with instrumentation, alerting, and reliability monitoring
- Create new partner capabilities by generalizing and reusing existing modules
- Participate in on-call rotations (~quarterly on-point frontline monitoring/triage)
- Coordinate across multiple teams and codebases; help drive prioritization and technical debt reduction
Requirements
- 3+ years of relevant engineering experience delivering complex backend systems independently (or equivalent via a CS/software degree)
- Strong backend engineering skills with a Python backend and relational database schemas
- Ability to think in systems and deliver end-to-end projects with architectural understanding
- Collaboration with product and business stakeholders
- Comfort with production operations: instrumentation, alerting, reliability monitoring, and on-call duties
Preferred / Additional
- Experience working with modern cloud-native architectures and microservices
- Experience using Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, GitHub, Jira/Confluence, and CircleCI
- Effective use of AI coding tools with strong engineering judgment to catch errors
Location / Working Model
- San Francisco Bay Area: work from the San Francisco office 2 days/week
- Remote (if applicable): available to collaborate during standard US West Coast working hours
