Role overview

Software Engineer (Backend) at Sleeper/Sundayy to help scale the core backend systems powering fantasy sports and Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS). You’ll design and build distributed, high-concurrency services with low latency and high availability, collaborating with product, design, and frontend teams to deliver user-facing features.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain core backend systems for fantasy contests, user profiles, leaderboards, and real-time features
Build scalable distributed backend architectures for millions of concurrent users with low latency and high availability
Own backend initiatives end-to-end (from conception through deployment), ensuring clean interfaces, documentation, and resilient infrastructure
Optimize performance using monitoring, profiling, and capacity planning to prevent bottlenecks
Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver features that improve engagement (e.g., real-time contest engines, game logic, personalized content, secure payments)
Conduct code reviews and promote backend engineering best practices
Stay current with emerging technologies to continuously improve system architecture and performance

Requirements

3+ years of professional backend software engineering experience
Proven experience designing and scaling distributed systems serving millions of users in real-time or gaming contexts
Proficiency in one or more: Go, Python, Node.js, or Java
Strong database fundamentals (SQL and NoSQL)
Experience with caching and message queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, or Pub/Sub)
Ability to design and maintain RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs, data models, and internal tooling
Cloud experience (AWS, GCP, or similar)
Familiarity with Docker and orchestration (Kubernetes is a plus)
Product mindset focused on reliability and user experience
Strong communication and collaboration skills
