Software Engineer (Backend, Machine Learning Training & Serving)

Role Overview

You will join Affirm’s ML Training & Serving team as a Software Engineer II (Backend). You’ll build and operate the core infrastructure that enables machine learning models to be trained and served across the company, working at the intersection of distributed systems, ML infrastructure, and platform engineering.

Key Missions

• Build and operate critical infrastructure for training and deploying machine learning models.
• Collaborate with other teams to break down larger projects into smaller tasks, deliver in phases, and ensure timely execution.
• Monitor operations and artifact availability by creating and tracking metrics, supporting ongoing reliability work (“keep the lights on”).

Responsibilities

• Write clear, well-tested, extensible backend code integrating multiple software components.
• Debug and review code across a large codebase; provide feedback through code reviews.
• Own your growth through proactive feedback from teammates, managers, and stakeholders.

Requirements

• 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer (or equivalent practical experience).
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
• Strong written and verbal communication for collaboration with a global engineering team.
• Familiarity with distributed systems building blocks.
• Experience building and launching backend systems, proficient in Python or Kotlin.
• Familiar with AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience and comfort working in ML training/serving infrastructure and platform engineering contexts.
