Software Development Engineer

Role overview

Software Development Engineer (SDE) on the Switchboard Management Console team, working closely with a Principal SDE to build and improve the web-based platform. You’ll contribute end-to-end on new features, maintain code health, and take primary ownership when the Principal engineer is unavailable.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Principal SDE to design, implement, and ship Switchboard features end to end
• Maintain codebase health: bug fixes, dependency updates, refactoring, and technical debt reduction
• Triage and handle day-to-day engineering requests (e.g., minor UI/UX improvements, configuration changes, internal tooling)
• Act as primary engineering point of contact during the Principal’s PTO/absence: triage, escalation handling, and pragmatic decision-making
• Build and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to ensure reliability
• Participate in code reviews and provide/receive constructive feedback
• Collaborate with product, QA, and customer success to translate requirements into working software
• Document technical decisions, system behavior, and runbooks

Requirements

• 3–6 years of professional web application engineering
• Strong TypeScript and experience with a major frontend framework: React, Vue, or Angular (TanStack is a plus)
• Backend development experience with Node.js, Python, Go, or Rust (or similar)
• Experience designing/consuming RESTful APIs, including authentication patterns (OAuth2, JWT)
• Relational and/or NoSQL database familiarity and ability to write efficient queries
• Comfort with Linux/Unix and Git
• Ability to debug production issues independently and communicate clearly while owning resolutions
• Strong written and verbal communication

Nice to have

• Container deployment experience: Docker, Kubernetes
• Exposure to edge computing, IoT device management, or distributed systems
• CI/CD familiarity (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins)
• Startup/fast-paced environment experience
• Experience supporting or shadowing a Senior/Principal engineer in a backup capacity
