Software Development Engineer in Test (Money Movement)

Role Overview

Phantom is hiring a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) (Money Movement) to design and own test infrastructure for financial-grade systems. You’ll work closely with a squad shipping production financial software, balancing speed and correctness.

Responsibilities

• Own test coverage for your squad’s features and mission-critical money movement flows.
• Design, build, and maintain automated test suites, including for existing and new functionality.
• Perform manual and exploratory testing as needed.
• Integrate tests into CI/CD pipelines to enable fast, reliable feedback.
• Define and document QA standards within your squad.
• Partner with product engineers to “shift testing left” and identify quality risks early.
• Define what “passing” means in production terms for financial systems.
• Identify and prevent quality regressions, including contributing to incident post-mortems with actionable prevention steps.

Key Skills / Requirements

• Experience designing and building test frameworks from scratch (not just extending existing suites).
• Strong API testing expertise: REST, webhooks, idempotency, retry behavior, and edge cases at integration boundaries.
• Proficiency in at least one: Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, or Go.
• Working knowledge of SQL/databases and ability to implement correct test data seeding/cleanup.
• Experience testing payment flows, ledger systems, or compliance pipelines.
• Familiarity with webhook-based event systems, including out-of-order delivery.
• Deep understanding of idempotency, double-spend prevention, and eventual consistency in distributed systems.
• Ability to instrument tests for flakiness detection, coverage tracking, and runtime performance.
• Experience integrating test suites into CI tools like GitHub Actions or GitLab CI.
• Comfort operating in cloud environments and reading service logs/traces (AWS/GCP).
• Understanding of canary deployments and feature flags, and writing tests that survive staged rollouts.

Nice-to-have

• Hands-on experience with incident post-mortems and concrete prevention steps.
