Software Development Engineer II, Cloud Platform

Role Overview

Mapbox is seeking a Software Development Engineer II – Cloud Platform to help build and operate AWS-based infrastructure and deployment platforms for Mapbox services. You’ll work on infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, SRE/observability, and containerized platform tooling with an emphasis on cloud-native, containerized infrastructure, and GitOps.

Responsibilities

• Onboard and manage AWS resources using a declarative GitOps framework powered by Terraform and Terragrunt.
• Maintain and troubleshoot legacy AWS infrastructure deployed with CloudFormation/CDK, including services such as ECS, Lambda, and EMR.
• Architect and promote Kubernetes deployments for new services.
• Lead migration of deployment pipelines from ECS/CloudFormation to EKS/ArgoCD.
• Architect centralized CI pipelines using GitHub Actions (including Runs-on).
• Influence Mapbox Cloud Platform strategy around AWS architecture and open-source tools/frameworks.
• Configure and maintain observability (e.g., Datadog or Observe) for monitoring, alerting, and analytics.
• Support operational excellence through testing/monitoring and on-call responsibilities.
• Document engineering decisions and communicate them clearly through presentations and discussions.
• Contribute to a collaborative, transparent, data-driven culture.

Requirements

• 5+ years using infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Terragrunt; also mentions Atlantis and CDK).
• 4+ years orchestrating containerized workloads at scale using EKS and ECS.
• 4+ years building scalable CI/CD frameworks in distributed orgs using GitHub Actions.
• Strong expertise with Kubernetes, ArgoCD, and Istio.
• Proven ability to design secure, cost-efficient, durable solutions on AWS using: EKS, ECS, EC2, Lambda, Fargate, CloudFront, IAM, Route53, DynamoDB.
• Proficiency in at least one programming language: Python, Node.js, or Go.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience implementing/operating observability platforms (e.g., Datadog/Observe) and disaster recovery/observability tooling.
