About the role
Role Overview
Mid-Level Software Developer (specialized in Java) to support USDA APHIS trade certification systems. This is a remote role with occasional travel as required.
You will work on Java-based web applications used by importers, exporters, brokers, veterinarians, and government officials to submit declarations and generate export health and phytosanitary certificates for international trade compliance.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain Java application features and services
- Enhance existing systems under an Agile/SAFe delivery framework
- Troubleshoot production issues and support operational reliability
- Ensure systems remain reliable, secure, and compliant with federal standards
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and participate in Agile ceremonies
- Contribute to continuous improvement and quality delivery
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional software development experience (mid-level), including full lifecycle (design, development, testing, maintenance)
- Strong hands-on Java experience, including Spring / Spring Boot
- RESTful web services and ORM experience with JPA/Hibernate
- Experience deploying and maintaining applications in Microsoft Azure (e.g., App Service, Azure SQL, storage)
- Report/document generation experience with JasperReports/Jaspersoft Studio and iText (PDF/certificates)
- SQL and relational database performance tuning (queries/stored procedures)
- Git and CI/CD pipeline/tooling experience
- Familiarity with Agile or SAFe (sprint planning, estimation, retrospectives)
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain a Public Trust background investigation
Nice-to-Haves / Domain Context
- Experience with systems supporting government or compliance workflows (USDA APHIS trade certification systems)
- Experience working in O&M and modernization/enhancement contract environments
