Software Developer (Javascript, CSS)

Role Overview

BackerKit is seeking a Staff-level Engineer focused on frontend and UX. You’ll lead frontend/UX initiatives within a Ruby on Rails monolith, building user experiences using Rails views and modern frontend tooling.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Director of Engineering and senior engineers to define and execute the technical vision
• Evolve and standardize frontend architecture, including component design and rendering strategies
• Translate product and design requirements into maintainable, high-quality UI
• Simplify complex workflows to improve usability, responsiveness, and performance
• Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and Design to deliver innovative solutions
• Mentor and coach engineers to raise frontend and UX craftsmanship
• Drive a culture of continuous improvement, experimentation, and shared ownership
• Maintain high code quality, testing discipline, and documentation
• Participate in Agile processes (e.g., weekly retrospectives and iterative development)

Requirements

• Deep hands-on experience building high-quality user interfaces
• Strong fundamentals in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and browser behavior
• Experience working directly in Rails views, helpers, and partials
• Strong interest in/experience with Hotwire, Turbo, Stimulus, and Tailwind CSS
• Preference for simple, maintainable systems over unnecessary abstraction
• Strong product/interaction design instincts
• Proven ability to simplify complex workflows and improve usability
• Ability to operate across system-level thinking and detailed implementation
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration

Nice to Have

• 10+ years of software development experience (preferred)
