About the role
Role Overview
You will build internal automation tooling for engineers who design and deploy industrial automation systems. The goal is to remove repetitive work (manual tagging, rebuilding configs, repeated validation) by turning best practices into reusable tools—making the better way the easier way.
What You Will Be Doing
- Design and build internal tools that eliminate repetitive engineering tasks
- Write utilities, scripts, and services using Python, SQL, JavaScript, and other technologies as needed
- Create automated testing and validation for automation project artifacts so issues are caught before deployment
- Champion source control, branching strategies, and CI/CD using Git and Azure DevOps
- Identify recurring “start from zero” project patterns and build reusable foundations
- Evaluate and introduce AI-assisted workflows for:
- documentation
- code generation
- validation
- knowledge retrieval
- (and be clear on where AI does not help)
- Work closely with engineers to observe real workflows and convert findings into tools people actually use
- Write documentation and training to ensure tools stick post-launch
- Maintain and prioritize a real backlog to maximize operational payoff
Example Tooling
- Generators/validators for PLC tag structures, alarm definitions, and automation project configuration artifacts
- Parsers/converters for automation platform import/export files (PLC tag databases, SCADA configuration)
- Automated quality checks to catch common issues before field deployment
- CI/CD pipelines and automated testing for automation project assets
- Internal apps to compare project versions, analyze system configurations, and check standards compliance
- AI-assisted workflows for documentation generation, code review, standards validation, and engineering knowledge retrieval
- Integrations connecting engineering tools to version control, documentation, and project management systems
What You Need
- 3–5 years of software development with real depth in Python
- Comfort with SQL or JavaScript
- Experience in or alongside industrial automation (e.g., SCADA, PLCs, controls, manufacturing systems, systems integration, OEMs)
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience building automation tooling and validation for engineering project artifacts
- Familiarity with Azure DevOps CI/CD and Git-based workflows
