Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)

Location: Remote (United Kingdom) Salary: £74,000–£90,000/year (based on experience and interview evaluation)

Role Overview

Ocient is seeking an experienced Site Reliability Engineer to support and expand its “as a service” hosted data warehouse offering. You’ll help ensure high availability, performance, efficiency, and strong operational practices for customer-facing database services.

Responsibilities

Design and operate hosted services: Support the hosted database and related systems (e.g., message queues and storage) to ensure availability, performance, and efficiency.
Observability & incident management: Design and maintain monitoring, log centralization, and alerting.
Automation: Automate deployment and configuration of Linux-based servers (OS and hosted applications).
Security practices: Develop and maintain rigorous security to protect applications and customer data.
Testing automation: Assist with automation of testing pipelines for the database and monitoring of test infrastructure.

Requirements (Ideal Qualifications)

3+ years of system administration in production environments.
Scripting experience with Bash, Python, or other languages.
Experience with monitoring/alerting and observability tools, such as:
- ELK stack, Graylog, InfluxDB, Prometheus, Zabbix, Grafana, Dynatrace (or similar)
Configuration management: Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.
Experience with data archiving, backup, and disaster recovery.
CI/CD: Jenkins or GitLab CI (or similar).
Source control: Git.
Ability to work flexible hours and participate in on-call rotations.

Nice to Have / Exceptional Candidate

OWASP knowledge and application security principles.
Virtualization and containerization experience (e.g., Proxmox, KVM, VMware).
SQL and Database Administration.
Cloud infrastructure operations (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
SSAE18 / SOC 2 compliance experience.
Networking administration (VPN, proxy, DNS, firewall configuration).
