About the role

Role Overview

SimpsonScarborough is seeking a Senior Web Developer to build scalable, high-performance digital experiences for higher education organizations. You’ll combine hands-on development with technical consultation, helping translate strategy and design into accessible, performant, and maintainable web and full-stack solutions—while evaluating and integrating AI-enabled capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Build responsive, accessible, high-performing websites and applications using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and modern frameworks.
  • Develop and maintain full-stack solutions across CMS platforms and custom applications (themes, templates, plugins/modules, APIs, and server-side functionality).
  • Use AI-assisted development tools and integrate AI-powered features (e.g., search, personalization, chat, content generation).
  • Partner with UX, Creative, Strategy, and Account teams to ensure technical feasibility and smooth handoffs.
  • Create scalable front-end systems: reusable components and pattern libraries for consistency and maintainability.
  • Audit existing sites/platforms, identify optimization opportunities, and recommend scalable technical solutions.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, code reviews, and workflow improvements; help shape best practices and emerging technology decisions.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional web development experience.
  • Strong expertise in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and PHP, plus modern front-end frameworks.
  • Experience building within CMS platforms such as WordPress or Drupal (or similar).
  • Working knowledge of APIs and AI-assisted development/integration for digital products.
  • Experience with Git and modern development workflows.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility, responsive design, SEO, and web performance.
  • Ability to translate wireframes/design systems into production-ready experiences.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration in remote, cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent education/experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with higher education CMS platforms such as Modern Campus, Cascade, or Terminal4.
  • Experience with platforms such as Vercel or Pantheon.
  • Familiarity with Laravel, Storybook, Tailwind CSS, or related tools.
  • Experience implementing AI-driven functionality (e.g., chat interfaces, semantic search, content automation).
  • Contributions to open-source or developer communities.
