Senior/Staff Frontend Engineer

Role overview

Selara is hiring Senior and Staff Frontend Engineers to build and modernize the VA.gov frontend, the digital front door for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. You’ll ship user-facing features at scale and help move a long-lived React codebase forward with modern patterns.

Responsibilities

• Build and ship user-facing features on the VA.gov frontend
• Write modern React using function components, hooks, and TypeScript
• Migrate older class components and Redux patterns toward modern standards
• Compose UI using the VA Design System for consistent, responsive experiences
• Ensure accessibility compliance (WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508)
• Integrate with REST APIs; handle loading, error, and offline states
• Strengthen test coverage with component tests and browser-level end-to-end tests
• Improve CI feedback loops, review code, and collaborate effectively in a distributed team
• Staff level: set technical direction across teams, mentor senior engineers, and drive long-running migrations

Requirements

• Deep experience building production React applications with modern patterns
• Strong TypeScript and current JavaScript tooling
• Demonstrated accessibility experience (accessibility as a requirement, not cleanup)
• Experience integrating with and debugging REST APIs
• Testing instincts across unit/component/e2e layers
• Comfort with Git-based collaboration, code review, and CI on GitHub
• Clear written communication in a remote/distributed environment

Nice to have

• Experience with VA.gov, vets-website, or other large civic-tech frontend systems
• Familiarity with the US Web Design System or other mature design systems
• Experience with Playwright or Cypress at scale
• Federal delivery experience and working under Public Trust requirements

Location / eligibility

• Fully remote within the United States
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a federal Public Trust suitability determination (background investigation required) to work on VA.gov
