Senior Software Engineer, Search

Role Overview

Flock Safety is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Search) to join the Search team. The role is frontend-leaning (~90%), while maintaining enough fullstack context to deliver seamless end-to-end Search features on a high-traffic production system.

Responsibilities

• Champion frontend architecture for Search across a React/TypeScript/Node.js ecosystem
• Collaborate with backend engineers, product, and design to shape the future Search experience
• Deliver high-quality, user-focused features for customers who rely on Search daily
• Maintain strong engineering standards, including thorough PR reviews and leading team discussions
• Learn owned services quickly and progressively take on larger tasks across repositories

Requirements

• 5+ years professional software development experience
• Deep mastery of modern frontend web development, including:
  • React and TypeScript
  • Design patterns and UI design fundamentals
• Data visualization experience, especially mapping libraries (e.g., Mapbox, Google Maps API) and/or complex map-based visualizations
• Fullstack/backend comfort:
  • Node.js / Express for web services
  • Solid understanding of API design (e.g., REST, GraphQL, gRPC)
• Microservice awareness:
  • Basic SQL and knowledge of service-to-service calling patterns (e.g., PostgreSQL)
• Strong problem-solving in ambiguous situations and proactive ownership
• Growth mindset and commitment to continuous learning

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with AWS managed services (e.g., S3, API Gateway, SNS/SQS)
• Experience optimizing frontend performance for high-traffic, data-heavy applications

90 Days at Flock (high level)

• First 30 days: onboard to Search services, review architecture and PRs, push code to production early, and meet product/design/partner teams
• First 60 days: take on larger cross-repo tasks, propose system/architecture improvements, and lead team-facing technical discussions; participate in customer calls
