Senior Software Engineer (PHP)

Role overview

Senior Software Engineer (Full-Stack) for NMI’s Fee Navigator team, within the Account Management & Signup Tools value stream. You’ll build secure, production-ready software that automates fee analysis and proposal generation.

Responsibilities

• Contribute across the full SDLC: planning/design, implementation, code review, testing, and deployment
• Design and build features in FeeNavigator using PHP/Laravel and Vue
• Write and optimize database queries; improve MySQL performance
• Ensure end-to-end quality with developer-led testing (unit, integration, end-to-end)
• Improve health of a large codebase by refactoring, decomposing complex components, and maintaining maintainable structure
• Document critical business logic, workflows, and architectural decisions
• Partner with Product Managers on requirements refinement and technical solution design
• Maintain engineering quality through code reviews and sharing best practices
• Work with SRE to ensure services are observable, resilient, secure, and production-ready
• Diagnose and resolve incidents, defects, and performance bottlenecks
• Improve development processes, tooling, and engineering practices

Requirements

• 5+ years building complex applications
• Strong PHP and modern development practices
• Solid object-oriented programming and design patterns
• Relational database experience, especially MySQL (schema design, query optimization)
• Modern frontend skills: JavaScript/TypeScript, Vue, npm, and basic CSS/SCSS
• Ability to work in large established codebases with limited guidance
• Familiarity with secure coding principles
• Experience with Git and CI/CD workflows
• Effective across the full SDLC
• Ability to use AI-assisted development tools effectively and validate outputs
• Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively

Preferred qualifications

• Strong Laravel (or similar PHP frameworks)
• Vue ecosystem experience: Quasar, Pinia, Vite
• Containerization: Docker
• Caching: Redis, Memcached
• AWS services: ECS, ECR, S3, SQS
• Observability tools: Sentry, New Relic
• Cloud-native/SaaS architecture exposure (scalability, resilience, multitenancy)
• Python/ML-adjacent experience: Flask, Pandas, scikit-learn
• Experience integrating AI capabilities into applications
• Track record of raising engineering standards (test coverage, reducing technical debt, modernizing legacy)
