About the role

Role Overview

Senior Software Engineer (Senior individual contributor) responsible for designing, developing, and delivering secure, scalable, reliable enterprise software for Pearson’s Higher Education Digital (HED) products and platforms. You will act as a technical leader and subject matter expert, influencing engineering direction across multiple teams and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support enterprise-scale applications and services
  • Lead complex technical initiatives across multiple systems, services, and engineering teams
  • Ensure solutions meet quality, security, performance, maintainability, and reliability standards
  • Participate in and influence architecture and design discussions
  • Drive adoption of modern engineering practices (e.g., CI/CD, automated testing, DevOps, observability, cloud-native architectures)
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity and solution quality
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Architecture, Security, Quality Engineering, and Operations to deliver business outcomes
  • Provide technical leadership via code reviews, design reviews, mentoring, and knowledge sharing
  • Troubleshoot production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement preventative improvements
  • Identify and communicate risks, dependencies, and technical challenges to stakeholders
  • Provide realistic estimates and meet delivery commitments
  • Contribute to platform modernization, cloud migration, scalability, security, and reliability initiatives
  • Support operational excellence, including participation in incident management/production support when needed

Managerial Responsibilities

  • No direct people-management responsibilities
  • Expected to provide technical leadership and mentorship, guide architectural decisions, and coach less experienced engineers

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field
  • 8+ years professional software engineering experience supporting enterprise-scale applications and services
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives across multiple teams
  • Proven experience building and operating cloud-native applications
  • Experience working within Agile teams

  • Strong architectural thinking and ability to influence engineering direction
  • Operational excellence mindset (incidents, production support, preventative improvements)
  • Experience with observability and DevOps/CI/CD practices
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering practices and modernization efforts
