Role Overview

Senior Software Engineer / Architect (Senior Individual Contributor)

Join Pearson’s engineering organization to provide hands-on technical leadership, own major parts of the codebase, and shape long-term architectural direction across a ~45-person engineering org.

What You’ll Do

• Own architecture and long-term technical roadmap for major areas of the technology stack
• Lead design of complex, scalable systems that meet business needs now and in the future
• Reduce complexity and technical debt by simplifying services, processes, and codebases
• Mentor technical leads and senior engineers to multiply team effectiveness via facilitation and inclusive decision-making
• Act as a technical evangelist, aligning technical and business strategies with executives and stakeholders
• Drive innovation in cost-effectiveness, scalability, and engineering productivity across the division

Requirements

• 5+ years of software development experience
• Deep expertise in software architecture, system design, and scalability with a strong hands-on background
• Proficiency with the core stack: Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL
• Proven track record making high-impact technical decisions in complex production environments
• Excellent cross-functional communication with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders
• Demonstrated experience mentoring senior engineers/technical leads
• Strong understanding of security, performance, resilience, and cloud-native design at scale
• Continuous learner staying current with industry trends and emerging technologies

Compensation / Incentives

• Base salary range: $150,000 – $180,000 (annual, varies by factors such as skill set, level of experience, and location)
• Eligible for an annual incentive program
