Senior Software Engineer — Payments (Remote LATAM)

Role overview

Senior Software Engineer for Payments (hands-on IC) on Playbypoint’s Platform/Payments team, responsible for the infrastructure that moves money across the platform. You will partner with Product, Finance, and Club Operations to convert business needs into secure, scalable systems.

Responsibilities

• Architect and build core payments infrastructure for:
  • Online checkout
  • In-person POS terminals
  • Recurring billing
  • Payouts, refunds, and reconciliation
• Own reliability of money movement including:
  • Idempotency
  • Webhook processing
  • Failure recovery
  • Reconciliation
• Drive PCI DSS scope hygiene and keep financial systems auditable and observable
• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver payments features such as:
  • Split payments
  • Deposits
  • Multi-currency
  • Marketplace payouts to coaches and pros
• Set the engineering bar for payments-critical code and mentor engineers on the team

Requirements

• 8+ years building backend systems in production with real operational responsibility, focused on payments/financial systems
• Hands-on production experience with Adyen (strong signal)
• 3+ years of production Ruby on Rails experience
• Strong failure-mode thinking (e.g., payment succeeds but webhook never arrives)
• “Money-safe” instincts: idempotency, exactly-once semantics, currency precision, ledger thinking
• Proven operation of high-availability services: monitoring, alerting, incident response, postmortems
• Correctness-first mindset in a high-velocity environment; default to async
• Clear written and spoken English for US-based stakeholders

Nice-to-haves / bonus

• Experience with other PSPs: Stripe, Xendit, RazorPay
• Familiarity with eWallet integrations or cryptocurrency payment rails
• Background in vertical SaaS, marketplaces, hospitality, or fintech
• Card-present POS experience (terminal fleet management, in-store reconciliation)

AI expectations

• Use AI tools throughout the SDLC (design, coding, code review, testing, debugging, incident analysis)
• Have built or shipped AI-powered tooling/automation (bonus)
• Show good judgment on when AI adds value
