Senior Software Engineer (Patient Platform, Backend)

Role overview

Join Hims & Hers as a Senior Software Engineer (Patient Platform, Backend). You’ll build and scale backend services for the Patient Health Data Platform, collaborating with cross-functional teams and mentoring engineers.

Key missions

• Lead backend design and architecture for scalable, high-performance services that meet product requirements.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship on best practices, design patterns, and coding standards.
• Participate in product discovery: assess feasibility, explore user needs, define features, and validate ideas with prototypes/experiments.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend solutions across distributed systems and microservices.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners to deliver production-quality services.
• Improve engineering practices through mentorship and consistent technical standards.

Requirements

• 5+ years shipping production code as a software engineer; 3+ years in distributed backend systems.
• Scalable web applications/services experience (preferably in cloud environments).
• Experience with microservice architectures (3+ years).
• Kubernetes and AWS used for delivery/hosting of front ends and microservices.
• Relational databases experience; PostgreSQL preferred.
• CI/CD experience with integrated unit tests and end-to-end integration tests.
• Agile software development experience.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and cross-team collaboration skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet goals with limited oversight.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent experience).

Nice-to-haves

• Healthcare tech experience (including wearables or connected device data).
• Experience building developer frameworks/tools (contributed to a framework itself, not just used it).
• Front-end familiarity: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React, React Native, Next.js.
• Web performance optimization experience.
