Senior Software Engineer II — Self-Serve Productivity

Role overview

Instacart is hiring a Senior Software Engineer II for the Self-Serve Productivity team. This is a full-stack role with a frontend-lean, focused on building and extending Portal, Instacart’s central hub for data.

Responsibilities

• Lead frontend architecture and product execution for Portal (user-facing data discovery experiences).
• Partner with data scientists, data engineers, analysts, and product engineers to design and ship tools used daily.
• Drive product and platform evolution of Portal as the unified data home base.
• Contribute across the stack as needed, including Python services, data pipelines, and APIs.
• Mentor teammates and champion engineering excellence with focus on frontend craft, performance, and UX quality.
• Collaborate with Data Science, ML, Product Eng, and Infra to translate data pain points into reliable self-serve solutions.

Required qualifications

• 7+ years experience in a similar environment.
• Strong frontend expertise with React and TypeScript, including shipping polished, performant UI in a large codebase.
• Ability to work full-stack: extend backend services in Python and reason about APIs, data models, and pipelines.
• Strong SQL knowledge.
• Familiarity with production data infrastructure technologies including Airflow and dbt, and experience with tools such as Snowflake.
• Experience working with a large codebase in cross-functional teams.
• Ability to balance urgency with high-quality, pragmatic delivery.
• Product mindset focused on user/tool experience.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience building internal developer tools / data tools / tools for technical users.
• Familiarity with data catalog and related metadata/lineage concepts (truncated in posting).
