Role overview
As a Senior Software Engineer II (Core Experience) at Instacart, you will improve the backend systems that power a seamless digital grocery shopping journey. You’ll help enhance content discoverability and purchase processes, and work to build backend architectures that support recommendation and personalization.
Team context
You’ll be part of the Core Experience organization, including the Order Quality team. The team owns key post-checkout capabilities such as:
- Intelligent replacement algorithms
- Real-time order status updates
- Customer communication via SMS, push notifications, and live activity tracking
- Features like item summary pages, chat, cancellations and rescheduling, and post-order feedback
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain high-quality backend applications
- Lead backend roadmap efforts with focus on scalability and reliability
- Innovate on new features that improve the customer shopping experience
- Own major product components, ensuring they meet internal and external standards
- Collaborate cross-functionally (ML engineers, product teams, data scientists) to drive consensus and outcomes
- Plan and execute projects end-to-end: from inception through deployment and maintenance
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend development experience with a strong delivery track record
- Proficiency in backend languages (text begins with Ruby but is truncated)
Nice-to-haves
- Experience partnering with ML/data teams to enable data-driven backend features (implied by collaboration focus)
