About the role

Role Overview

Join Flock Safety as a Senior Backend Engineer for Nightshift, a conversational AI assistant for investigators. You’ll help evolve the system’s architecture by building orchestration, integration pipelines, and an agentic framework that can act on behalf of investigators in real time.

Key Missions

  • Architect and evolve Nightshift by designing the orchestration backend and high-performance integration pipelines.
  • Build the backend orchestration layer for LLM tool calling and multi-step reasoning.
  • Design and implement secure “connectors” to query Flock’s core data services.
  • Lead development of a core Nightshift capability and set best practices for testing and deploying AI agents in a microservices environment.
  • Influence product direction based on technical findings.

Responsibilities

  • Implement agentic workflows that bridge unstructured LLM outputs to structured internal services.
  • Manage conversation state/context and ensure robust reliability via error handling and schema validation.
  • Establish production-grade engineering practices for scaling and reliability in AI deployments.

Requirements

  • Strong track record building production-grade backend systems with clean, performant code.
  • Deep understanding of LLM APIs (OpenAI/Anthropic/Gemini), including prompt engineering and conversation state/context management.
  • Experience with LLM evaluation tools such as LangSmith or Langfuse.
  • Experience with vector search/RAG and/or infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform).
  • Proficiency in Python or Go and TypeScript (Node) for scalable web services.
  • Proven ability to build LLM API integrations, including robust error handling and schema validation.
  • Experience with agentic patterns: function calling, tool use (MCP), and orchestrating multi-step LLM workflows.
  • Experience designing for microservice-oriented architecture and scale.
  • Ability to write and optimize complex SQL and data access patterns to keep LLMs grounded in real-time data.
  • Strong database confidence with PostgreSQL, OLAP databases, and Redis.
  • Proficient with AWS, Kubernetes (EKS), Docker, and CI/CD tooling.
  • Comfortable in zero-to-one environments: turn ambiguity into technical roadmaps.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Prior experience with high-volume image/data workloads and/or real-time investigative systems.
