About the role
Role Overview
Join Skydio as a Senior Software Engineer (Data Platform), a foundational member of the Data Team. You’ll build systems that collect, transform, and store data from thousands of autonomous drones, define data architecture, and bring AI-assisted analytics to the organization.
Key Missions
- Design and scale data infrastructure to ingest live telemetry from tens of thousands of autonomous drones, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
- Build and evolve Databricks and Palantir Foundry environments so every team can:
- query data
- define jobs
- build dashboards
- Establish and enforce data best practices for quality, lineage, and governance, keeping the data lakehouse secure and performant.
Responsibilities
- Hands-on development across the data stack, from ingestion and transformation to orchestration and visualization.
- Lead technical direction, mentor teammates, and promote engineering excellence across the organization.
- Translate data into clear narratives and decisions through strong cross-functional communication.
Requirements
- 5+ years professional experience, including:
- 2+ years in software engineering
- 2+ years in data engineering (with a bias toward hands-on work)
- Deep experience with Databricks, including pipelines, dataset management, and dashboard/analytical application development.
- Proficiency in SQL and at least one modern programming language (Python preferred/used).
- Comfort working across the full data stack (ingestion → transformation → orchestration → visualization).
- Proven ability to operate scalable data platforms and define organization-wide patterns for reliability, performance, and cost.
- Strong communication skills across engineers, analysts, and senior leadership.
Nice to Have
- Experience in robotics, IoT, autonomous systems, or building data systems integrated with real-world hardware.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted data workflows (tools that accelerate transformations or enable natural-language analytics).
