About the role
Role Overview
Senior Software Engineer on the Data Infrastructure team at Marqeta. You will independently identify and deliver software solutions, own and execute projects aligned to quarterly goals, and collaborate with cross-functional partners.
Key Missions
- Deliver software solutions within the Data Infrastructure team
- Own and deliver projects in support of quarterly goals
- Lead design for small-to-medium components and contribute to design for larger components
- Level up teammates by mentoring less-experienced engineers through guidance and strong examples
Responsibilities
- Work with cross-functional stakeholders to uncover technical blind spots and clarify ambiguity
- Decompose business problems into technical solutions that may involve multiple interacting components
- Contribute to quality and deadline delivery
- Build correct, maintainable software components for production systems
- Provide clear, audience-tailored communication (verbal and written)
Requirements
- Production experience with core data infrastructure technologies, including:
- Apache Kafka, Apache Spark, and Apache Airflow (or close equivalents)
- Strong production proficiency in Python
- Experience with monitoring and alerting for production systems
- Production experience with modern table formats: Parquet, Hudi, Iceberg, or Delta Lake
- Proficiency with SQL
- Experience with distributed systems
- Production experience with AWS (or another major cloud)
- 5+ years software engineering experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 3+ years with an advanced degree (or 8+ years relevant experience without a degree)
Nice to Have
- Infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK, or equivalent)
- CDC tooling experience, especially Debezium or Kafka Connect
- Experience in payments / FinTech
- Apache Iceberg specifically
- Data catalog tooling experience (e.g., DataHub)
- Experience with Java in addition to Python
- Exposure to Kubernetes and container-based workloads
- Experience building scalable software platforms
