Senior Software Engineer

Role overview

Join ClickHouse as a Senior Software Engineer. You will be a core contributor to ClickHouse’s data engineering ecosystem, owning and maintaining critical parts of the platform. Your work focuses on high-performance database engineering and developer experience, helping Data Engineers harness ClickHouse speed and scale through integrations, tools, and connectors.

Key missions

• Contribute significantly to ClickHouse’s data engineering ecosystem by owning and maintaining critical platform components.
• Manage the lifecycle of data framework integrations, from database drivers to SDKs and connectors.
• Collaborate with the open-source community, internal teams, and enterprise users to ensure ClickHouse JVM integrations set a high bar for performance.

Responsibilities

• Build and extend connectors, sinks, and sources for large data processing frameworks.
• Work on database internals and optimization to improve ingestion and query performance.
• Ensure high throughput and reliability of integrations across networks and protocols.
• Participate actively in the open-source community and influence the evolution of the core system through contributions.

Requirements

• 6+ years of software development experience delivering high-quality, data-intensive solutions.
• Experience developing/extending connectors/sinks/sources for at least one: Apache Spark, Apache Flink, Apache Beam, or Kafka Connect.
• Proven understanding of internals of at least one of: Apache Spark, Apache Flink, Kafka Connect, or Apache Beam.
• Strong database fundamentals: SQL, data modeling, query optimization, and familiarity with OLAP/analytical databases.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of JDBC, network protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP), and techniques to optimize data throughput over the wire.
• Solid concurrent programming experience in Java (threads, executors, reactive/asynchronous patterns).
• Strong proficiency in Java/JVM, including memory management, GC tuning, and performance profiling.
• Track record building scalable data integration systems (not just basic ETL jobs).
• Passion for open source and prior OSS contributions.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with ClickHouse or similar high-performance data platforms.
• Working knowledge of Python in data engineering contexts (e.g., Pandas, PySpark, Airflow) and ability to contribute to Python tooling when needed.
