About the role
Role Overview
Senior Software Engineer (Backend) at Bastion, focused on building and improving services in a fast-moving startup environment.
What You’ll Do
First 30 Days
- Learn the service “rails” (architecture, CI/CD, observability, engineering conventions)
- Ship a small feature slice or quality-of-life improvement
- Add tests, dashboards, or runbook notes for areas you touch
By 90 Days
- Own a service surface and raise the bar for reliability and quality
- Lead a medium-scope project (e.g., API contract updates, partner integration, or hardening a critical path)
- Improve logging, tracing, alerts, and failure handling
By 180 Days
- Drive cross-service impact (e.g., API versioning plan, data model migration, compliance-driven workflow changes)
- Shape technical direction via design docs and mentoring
- Collaborate with product and compliance on pragmatic, regulation-aware tradeoffs
Example Problems You May Work On
- Designing stable, evolvable custody/transfer/issuance APIs without breaking downstream clients
- Building idempotent, high-throughput job flows with strong audit trails
- Hardening key operations with hardware-backed isolation and robust key policies
- Improving p95 latency via query tuning, caching, or backpressure
Requirements & Qualifications
- Strong backend engineering background (Go and/or TypeScript/Node.js)
- Experience shipping production features with quality practices (tests, observability, operational readiness)
- Ability to lead projects and improve reliability/metrics over time
Nice-to-Haves / Likely Stack Exposure
- gRPC and REST; GraphQL/tRPC at the edge for BFFs
- Postgres, Redis, and Kafka; async workflow systems
- Temporal workflow management
- AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform
- Datadog, Grafana, Sentry, and incident/ops tooling
