Senior Software Engineer-Backend

Role Overview

Senior Software Engineer (Backend) on the Sales Engineering team at Scout Motors. You’ll help build the backend systems that power the end-to-end vehicle purchase journey, from trade-in and configuration through finance, leasing, and delivery.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain backend services across the customer purchase journey with clean, well-tested, production-quality code
• Design and implement APIs, data models, and service logic that are correct, performant, and easy to evolve
• Integrate with third-party providers (e.g., valuation services, lender platforms, logistics APIs, factory systems) via reliable, well-abstracted integration layers
• Apply distributed systems engineering patterns: error handling, retries, idempotency, and observability (including across external dependencies)
• Own features end-to-end: scoping/design → implementation → testing → deployment → production monitoring
• Participate in code and design reviews to maintain a high engineering bar
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and external/partner teams to deliver solutions that meet customer needs
• Improve team practices (documentation, testing standards, on-call processes, reliability)
• Use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to increase velocity and share best practices

Requirements

• Strong ability to write production-quality, reliable backend code
• Experience building APIs and service logic with correctness and performance in mind
• Hands-on experience integrating and operating with third-party systems
• Solid understanding of distributed systems concerns: retries, idempotency, error handling, observability

Nice-to-haves

• Experience owning features through the full lifecycle (design to monitoring)
• Demonstrated emphasis on engineering quality: testing, reviews, documentation, and operational reliability
