Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Platform (Payments)

Role overview

Senior Software Engineer (Backend) on the Payments team at Coinbase, building payment solutions for consumers and institutions in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Build new backend services to meet critical product and business needs using Golang.
• Design scalable backend systems to solve novel problems using modern cloud technologies and best practices.
• Define a long-term backend vision for maintaining and scaling backend systems and the teams that run them.
• Partner cross-functionally with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to turn product/technical vision into a quarterly roadmap.
• Write high-quality, well-tested code for customer needs.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of software engineering experience.
• Experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services.
• Ability to compose and work with service-oriented architecture.
• Strong engineering practices: high-quality, tested code.
• Motivation to build an open financial system.
• Experience responsibly using generative AI tools and copilots in daily workflows (e.g., LibreChat, Gemini, Glean) and applying human-in-the-loop practices.

Nice to have

• Experience through rapid company growth (startup to mid-size).
• Built growth experiments and/or A/B tests.
• Experience with blockchains (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).
• Experience decomposing a large monolith into microservices.
• Experience with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres, MongoDB, Redshift.
• Experience building financial, high-reliability, or security systems.

Work model / location

• In-person participation required throughout the year (remote-first but not remote-only).
• Team and company offsites held multiple times annually.
