Role Overview

Senior Software Engineer (Backend) (Full remote)

As a Senior Software Engineer at Newsela, you’ll design, build, and maintain backend components of the platform that power attendance analytics, process management, and family communication for schools and students.

Key Missions / Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain software platform components supporting:
- Attendance analytics
- Process management
- Family communication tools
Maintain and improve student and attendance data systems to ensure they remain performant and scalable as data grows to tens of millions of records.
Develop new features that enhance product capabilities and drive meaningful outcomes for schools and students.

Requirements

5+ years of software engineering experience with a strong foundation in scalable backend systems.
Strong ability to manage multiple projects/priorities with attention to detail and high-quality delivery.
Experience working with AWS infrastructure, including:
- Terraform
- ECS
- RDS/Aurora
- SES
- Messaging systems such as SQS/SNS
Comfort working in ambiguous, evolving environments with a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset.
Strong communication skills, including articulating technical concepts, trade-offs, and decisions to stakeholders.
Experience collaborating across teams to drive alignment and deliver against shared goals.
Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.

Nice to Have

Experience in education or education technology.

Core Technical Focus

Backend programming with Python, Java, or similar
SQL and database management
Ability to work across multiple parts of the stack; familiarity with frontend technologies such as React or Angular is mentioned.
