About the role
Role: Senior Software Engineer (Backend)
You’ll build and scale the backend powering Apron’s core product lines (e.g., Bill Pay and Apron Card) as well as critical business systems like fraud detection.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and scale backend systems for core products and supporting infrastructure.
- Work cross-functionally with Frontend Engineers, Product Managers, and Product Designers to ship features from discovery through production.
- Create financial integrations where both security and speed are priorities.
- Share expertise with the team by driving innovation, suggesting improvements, and raising engineering standards.
Requirements
- 8+ years of continuous experience as a backend engineer.
- In-house experience in a product-led, fast-paced environment (startup or tech company).
- Strong proficiency in JVM-based languages, ideally Kotlin, for server-side development.
- Comfort with relational databases and trade-offs at scale.
- High attention to code quality, efficient architecture, and performance optimization.
Nice to have
- Hands-on Kotlin experience.
- Kubernetes and Terraform experience.
- Deep PostgreSQL experience (e.g., GiST indexes, partitioning, replication).
Location & Working Model
- Hybrid: 3 days per week in London (Liverpool Street) offices.
