About the role
Role Overview
Join Abnormal AI as a Senior Backend Engineer on the App Foundations team. You will own core platform and customer-centric services, design and operate high-performance, low-latency systems, and help build capabilities in the LLM inference platform. You’ll mentor engineers, partner with product managers, and participate in hiring.
Key Missions
- Design, build, and operate high-performance, low-latency services across the App Foundations portfolio (API design, distributed systems reliability, LLM inference infrastructure).
- Lead end-to-end delivery of platform features and stability workstreams, improving SLO-backed reliability and strengthening observability and on-call posture.
- Mentor engineers through tech design and PR reviews; act as a subject matter expert for systems you own; support hiring and onboarding.
Responsibilities
- Own Tier-0 systems and drive reliability improvements.
- Contribute to LLM inference platform work (infrastructure and productionization).
- Collaborate asynchronously with remote stakeholders.
- Act as a credible SME and participate in hiring.
- Use AI coding tools daily and embed AI leverage into engineering workflows.
Requirements
- 5+ years backend engineering experience building and operating production services at scale.
- 2+ years system design experience with non-trivial cross-team architectures.
- 4+ years on relevant stacks: Python (Django) and/or Go, MySQL/PostgreSQL, plus hands-on experience with Kafka, Redis, and Elasticsearch.
- Experience leading multi-quarter projects end-to-end (design → implementation → launch → post-launch operations).
- Proven daily use of AI coding tools, with specific examples of workflow improvements.
- 3+ years supporting enterprise-class customers in production, including SLO ownership, on-call, and incident response.
- Strong written and verbal communication; ability to collaborate autonomously with remote teams.
- Hands-on experience building LLMs in production: provider APIs (OpenAI/Anthropic/Bedrock), model routing/fallback, evals, batch inference, and/or cost/quota tooling.
Nice to Have
- Experience with notification delivery systems and/or licensing/entitlement platforms.
- Building and shipping AI agents/automations (coding agents, ops agents, classifier pipelines).
- Opinionated about how AI changes the role of a senior engineer in the next 1–3 years.
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
- Experience mentoring engineers / acting as tech lead on a small squad.
About the Team
This is an AI-native team where AI is treated as core infrastructure, not an experiment.
