About the role
Role overview
BeamNG is seeking a Senior Rendering Programmer with strong C++ and real-time rendering expertise. You’ll work independently inside a proprietary engine environment and take ownership of complex, long-term rendering projects from concept to completion.
Responsibilities
- Improve BeamNG’s proprietary C++ engine and renderer beyond what’s typical with common engines.
- Work across multiple graphics backends:
- DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan, and console APIs
- Ensure features are consistent, correct, and performant across all supported platforms.
- Implement and improve rendering features end to end.
- Optimize GPU/CPU frame time and memory usage.
- Write simple, maintainable code for long-term sustainability.
- Independently learn new codebase areas as needed for each task.
- Apply linear algebra and geometric principles to rendering problems.
- Investigate and resolve GPU vendor/driver/hardware-specific issues across a wide range of player hardware.
- Support build scripts, library integrations, and continuous integration.
Collaboration
- Participate actively in internal discussions and keep track of items impacting engine/renderer development.
- Own project advancement with minimal oversight.
- Work closely with artists and technical artists to deliver real-time visuals.
- Assist and guide developers; occasionally perform minor code reviews.
Requirements
- Proven track record modifying/creating rendering code in a custom/proprietary engine.
- C++ foundation and real-time rendering experience (5+ years).
- Experience with multithreading primitives and parallel command recording.
- Hands-on experience with at least one modern graphics API: DirectX 12, Vulkan, or console equivalent.
- Shader authoring in HLSL or GLSL, including compute shaders.
- Strong understanding of the real-time rendering pipeline and GPU hardware, including:
- rasterization, lighting, shadowing, materials, post-processing
- synchronization and resource lifetimes
- Comprehensive knowledge of CPU/GPU memory management and optimization.
- Strong math for rendering: linear algebra, vectors/matrices, coordinate spaces, geometry, color spaces.
- Profiling/debugging experience with tools like RenderDoc, PIX, Nsight, or vendor profilers.
- Ability to take ownership and drive initiatives to completion.
- Excellent written and spoken English; additional languages a plus.
Nice to have
- Built your own custom engine/renderer as a personal/hobby project.
- Experience supporting multiple graphics backends via shared abstraction.
- Console development experience.
- Familiarity with shader compilation toolchains and cross-compilation (e.g., DXC, SPIR-V) and shader permutation systems.
- Willingness to provide mentorship and conduct code reviews.
- Proficiency with Linux programming and scripting.
- Knowledge of CI, troubleshooting build issues, and integrating new libraries/platforms.
- VR rendering experience.
