About the role

Role Overview

Join Mattermost as a Senior React Native Engineer to own and evolve the company’s mobile experience for teams in defense, intelligence, and critical infrastructure. This is a fully remote role focused on architecture, reliability, performance, and mentoring—while contributing to Mattermost’s open-source codebase.

Key Responsibilities

Architect and evolve the React Native application for deployment on networks with limited or unreliable connectivity.
Define and improve WebSocket reliability and data synchronization during degraded network conditions.
Drive performance improvements across:
- Network efficiency
- Package size
- Memory consumption
Mentor engineers on mobile architecture and best practices.
Uphold security and compliance standards for enterprise/regulate environments.
Contribute to the open-source ecosystem.

Requirements

Strong outcomes in mobile engineering (what you built and the problems you solved).
Networking fundamentals: HTTP, WebSockets, connection lifecycle, and building resilient apps for unreliable networks.
React Native expertise with JavaScript/TypeScript and ability to discuss real tradeoffs.
Offline-first experience: local persistence, sync strategies, and conflict resolution.
Familiarity with iOS and/or Android development.
Evidence of adapting to new tooling ("AI fluency" and learning agility).

Nice to Have

Reactive programming patterns (e.g., RxJS).
Mobile database solutions (e.g., WatermelonDB).
Familiarity with Expo, including migrating from bare React Native.
Mobile security best practices in enterprise/regulatory contexts.
Background in defense, intelligence, or critical infrastructure products.
Experience in distributed/remote-first teams.
Open-source contributions.
Experience improving mobile developer tooling or testing infrastructure.

Eligibility / Compliance

Must meet federal eligibility requirements.
Must meet eligibility requirements for access to export-controlled information under U.S. EAR/ITAR.
