About the role
Role overview
Underdog Sports is hiring a Senior Product Designer specializing in motion design. You’ll shape how the product moves, responds, and feels—using motion to clarify interactions, guide attention, communicate system status, and enhance usability while maintaining performance and accessibility.
What you’ll do
- Collaborate on and lead motion design across the product:
- Define principles, patterns, and guidelines for interaction and UI motion.
- Design high-quality microinteractions (e.g., transitions, state changes, loading/empty states, feedback, onboarding moments) to improve usability and delight.
- Prototype early and often using motion-forward tools to explore interaction models and validate concepts.
- Partner with engineers to ensure motion is implemented accurately, efficiently, and accessibly; provide specs and support QA.
- Create reusable motion components and contribute to the design system (e.g., tokens, easing/curves, durations, choreography rules).
- Improve comprehension with motion that communicates hierarchy, cause/effect, and status (errors, success, progress, latency).
- Use research and data to measure motion impact (comprehension, conversion, time-to-complete, error reduction).
- Mentor and up-level motion craft via reviews, critiques, and workshops.
- Collaborate with Brand/Marketing to keep motion cohesive across product and storytelling surfaces.
Who you are
- 3–5 years of product design experience, with strong motion design emphasis in shipped digital products.
- A portfolio showing interaction design + motion craft, including problem framing, process, and outcomes.
- Expert grasp of timing, easing, choreography, and narrative flow for UI motion.
- Strong systems thinking (scalable patterns vs. one-off animations).
- Deep collaboration skills with engineering; comfortable discussing implementation constraints (e.g., performance and platform behaviors).
- Fluent in accessibility and inclusive design, including reduced motion strategies.
- Excellent communication: explain the “why” behind motion choices and align stakeholders on tradeoffs.
- Experience across web and/or mobile (iOS/Android) in cross-functional teams.
Nice to have
- Experience building/maintaining a motion system within a design system (tokens, guidelines, governance).
- Familiarity with implementation frameworks/pipelines such as Rive, Lottie, After Effects, CSS/JS animations, or Framer Motion.
- Experience with complex product areas (data-heavy UI, sports gaming, finance).
- Comfort with metrics-driven iteration and experimentation.
