About the role

Role Overview

Ashby is hiring a Senior Product Designer to rethink how modern software is designed. The role blends design with product thinking: you’ll work as part designer, part product manager, part consultant, and part (partial) design systems manager.

How You’ll Work

  • Product teams typically include a PM + Designer + ~4–5 engineers.
  • The team’s approach is principled: sometimes design requires ownership end-to-end; other times design may mainly involve setting direction, improving existing components, and editing decisions made by PMs/engineers.
  • You’ll collaborate closely with founders and the product team; design is treated as a shared product-team responsibility, not only a designer-only function.

What We’re Building (Problem Space)

Ashby supports talent teams in creating fast, high-quality candidate experiences. A core challenge described is coordinating interviews and scheduling efficiently (e.g., “Calendar Tetris” to find availability while accounting for interviewer load and training needs).

Responsibilities

  • Own or significantly contribute to product design efforts across complex talent-hiring workflows.
  • Provide product-level thinking when needed (briefing, scoping, and owning projects when appropriate).
  • Contribute to improving decision-making across the product team (not every decision is made by the design department).
  • Help tackle the biggest design challenges while enabling PMs/engineers to make better decisions.

Requirements

  • Versatile senior designer capable of switching between hands-on design and product/PM-style ownership when required.
  • Strong understanding of designing software in varying degrees depending on the project needs.
  • Ability to thrive in an IC-heavy environment with autonomy and minimal meetings.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience contributing to or managing parts of a design system.
  • Experience with product discovery / iterative product improvement in a fast-growing startup environment.

About Ashby
