About the role
Role Overview
Join Dropbox as a Senior Manager of Data Engineering. You will build a strong data quality culture, lead engineering of a self-serve analytics platform, and drive measurable improvements in cost and efficiency while maintaining reliability.
Key Missions
- Establish and enforce data quality practices: lineage, freshness monitoring, anomaly detection, and quality metrics.
- Lead a self-serve analytics substrate to reduce bespoke request volume and increase partner-team autonomy.
- Own data platform unit economics by improving compute and storage efficiency without sacrificing reliability.
Responsibilities
- Partner with multiple teams (engineering, data science, analytics, and business partners).
- Establish and scale engineering practices for reliability and quality.
- Lead a high-talent-density team of data engineers; drive hiring, coaching, performance management, and team design.
- Ensure data SLAs with observability, lineage, and incident response for business-critical pipelines.
Requirements
- 8+ years of data engineering or backend/data infrastructure experience with increasing scope.
- Reliability & data quality ownership: data SLAs, observability, lineage, and incident response for critical pipelines.
- Deep technical expertise building and operating large-scale batch and streaming pipelines, using tools such as Spark, dbt, and Airflow (or similar orchestration).
- Experience with a modern lakehouse/warehouse stack such as Databricks, Snowflake, or BigQuery.
- 3+ years managing and growing engineering teams (hiring, coaching, performance management, and team design).
- Ability to design a semantic layer and data contracts for many downstream consumers.
- Proven ability to improve compute/storage unit economics while maintaining reliability.
Nice-to-Haves
- Track record building self-serve data/analytics platforms that reduce bespoke requests and increase autonomy.
- Experience integrating AI coding tools / LLM-based tooling with guardrails.
- Experience operating in a pod/embedded model serving multiple business partners.
- Familiarity with data governance, privacy, and access control practices.
