Senior Machine Learning Scientist

Role Overview

Turnitin is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Scientist to integrate machine learning across its product suite. You will partner with product and engineering teams to deliver impact at scale, working on model training, dataset construction, and model hardening.

Key Missions / Responsibilities

• Train and maintain machine learning models, with an emphasis on R&D and new model architectures.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts and product owners to define the right questions and model outputs.
• Develop, refine, and harden ML models using best practices for:
  • Dataset selection and construction
  • Model architectures and hyperparameters
• Work on deep learning–leaning applied science systems and production-ready implementations.

Requirements

• English fluency (written and spoken).
• Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, AI, Machine Learning, applied math, or related field, with relevant industry experience or outstanding prior achievements.
• Computer Science background required (not primarily statistics or pure mathematics).
• Machine/Deep Learning development skills, including experiment tracking (AWS SageMaker, Hugging Face, Transformers, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Jupyter, Weights & Biases).
• Software engineering background with at least 8 years of experience.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Experience with text data for supervised and unsupervised ML and deep learning.
• Strong understanding of Language Models including using, training, and/or fine-tuning and familiarity with industry-standard LM families.
• Strong grasp of ML/DL math and theory.
• Ability to code for at-scale production, including best practices and building backend API services or libraries.
• Essential DevOps skills (Docker; AWS EC2/Batch/Lambda).
• Experience with advanced prompting, fine-tuning, or training LLMs (open-source or cloud) using industry platforms (e.g., mosaic.ai or stochastic.ai).
• Familiarity with building front-ends for demos/POCs/prototypes (e.g., LLM demos; React/JavaScript/Flask).
• Ability to show previous work (website, presentations, open-source code, etc.).

Nice to Have

• Experience with deep learning in other modalities such as vision or speech.
