Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Trust

Role Overview

Airbnb is hiring a Senior Machine Learning Engineer (Trust) for the Trust & Safety team. The team works on detecting reservations with party intent that may violate Airbnb policies, with the goal of blocking users before check-in to prevent critical life safety incidents.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

• Work with large-scale structured and unstructured data to build and continuously improve cutting-edge ML models.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, data scientists, designers, and customer service operations to predict and prevent life safety and property damage incidents in real time.
• Develop holistic detection strategies with other Trust & Safety prevention teams.
• Partner with software engineers, operations, and data scientists to identify business-impact opportunities for fraud detection and mitigation.
• Hand-on build, productionize, and operate ML models and pipelines at scale for batch and real-time use cases.

Your Expertise (Requirements)

• 5+ years of industry experience in applied machine learning, with an MS or PhD (preferred) in relevant fields.
• Strong programming and data engineering skills: Scala / Python / Java / C++ (or equivalent).
• Deep knowledge of ML best practices, including:
  • training/serving skew minimization
  • A/B testing
  • feature engineering
  • feature/model selection
• Solid algorithms knowledge (e.g., gradient boosted trees, neural networks/deep learning, optimization) and exposure to one or more domains such as NLP, computer vision, personalization/recommendation, anomaly detection.
• Experience with 3+ of: TensorFlow, PyTorch, Kubernetes, Spark, Airflow, Kafka, data warehouse (e.g., Hive).
• Experience building end-to-end ML infrastructure and/or productionizing ML models.
• Familiar with architectural patterns for high-scale software (e.g., APIs, high-volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms/models).
• Experience with test-driven development, A/B testing, and incremental delivery/deployment.
• Trust & Risk domain experience is a plus.

Location / Work Model

• US – Remote Eligible with occasional office work or offsite attendance as agreed with your manager.
• Requires living in a state where Airbnb is registered (per posting).
