Senior Legal Counsel

Role Overview

Join Rula as a Senior Legal Counsel (full remote). You will provide practical legal guidance on employment, privacy, and security matters, helping the company stay compliant and build foundational processes in a fast-paced environment.

Key Missions

• Partner with internal stakeholders to deliver practical guidance on employment, privacy, and security legal issues.
• Translate complex regulations into efficient, actionable advice that supports day-to-day operations.
• Build and establish foundational compliance processes to help achieve Rula’s mission.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational legal support across employment law (policies, training, disputes, compliance).
• Support privacy and security compliance, including incident and breach response guidance.
• Review and negotiate relevant agreements (e.g., business associate agreements and related security/privacy agreements).
• Help manage compliance complexity for a fully distributed, nationwide remote workforce.
• Manage contract lifecycle activities including drafting and negotiation.

Requirements

• 5+ years employment law experience (law firm or in-house), including knowledge of:
  • Worker classification
  • Workplace policies and training
  • Employee performance management
  • Wage and hour and FLSA requirements
  • EEOC matters
  • Discrimination, sexual harassment
  • Leave (e.g., FMLA)
  • Accommodations (e.g., ADA)
  • Retaliation and wrongful discharge
• Strong writing, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills for clear, practical guidance in a fast-paced environment.
• 5+ years healthcare privacy and security law experience, including:
  • HIPAA and state consumer privacy laws
  • Data breach and cyber incident response/management
  • Contractual reviews (e.g., business associate agreements, data use agreements, security agreements)
• Experience with state AI laws in employment and privacy contexts (e.g., workplace monitoring, automated decision-making).
• 7+ years progressive, relevant legal experience as a practicing attorney.
• Proven in-house experience in a high-growth technology, digital health, or healthcare startup environment.
• Ability to support multi-state employment and privacy compliance for a 100% remote nationwide workforce.
• Expertise in marketplace/gig/platform business models, including advanced worker classification issues (contractor vs. employee) and risk mitigation at scale.
• Contract lifecycle management: drafting and negotiating contracts.
• Healthcare regulatory experience.
